Gene Editing On Human Cloning - 1841 Words
Gene editing on human embryos, a highly sensitive and controversial practice in the medical world, has been debated over its ethical properties in many medical summits such as the international summit in Washington DC that took place recently. Genome editing is a form of genetic engineering in which DNA is inserted, deleted or replaced in the genome of an organism, using engineered nucleases, or molecular scissors. Gene editing on human embryo is extremely risky, medically unnecessary in most aspects, and considered profoundly damaging to social justice and human rights. Technology is ever evolving, however, the technology dealing with the gene editing on human embryos is not developing in the most ethical ways. As a result, of gene editing, many peoplesââ¬â¢ eyes have been opened to unethical forms of treatment such as the creation of methods to select the childââ¬â¢s gender, the ridding of offspringââ¬â¢s genetically linked diseases, and the manipulation of the human DNA of the unborn embryo. Biotechnology prompts a fear that humanity is gaining too much control over the choice of human evolution and destiny (McLean 1). Because of the high demand for organs including hearts, livers, and kidneys, scientists have since turned to genetically modifying mammals such as pigs as a source of potential organs for transplant. This has involved disruption of genes in pigs that cause tissue rejection in humans or knocking out genes that allow transmission of retroviruses. This technology has set the record in all the editing methods to control the genetic makeup of an offspring (Sas Lawrenz, 2017). This record is helped by the ability of CRISPR-Cas9 to replicate any gene in the human genome by using 20 bases. This method uses a RNA strand (CRISPR), the bases, and an endonuclease (Cas 9). We first have to understand where CRISPR comes into play, and that is genomic editing. Genome editing is where engineered nucleases are either inserted, replaced, or deleted in a living organismââ¬â¢s genome, and genomic editing is done with the help of the system CRISPR. Determining Patterns Of Sedentary Behavior And Body Mass...
Determining Patterns of Sedentary Behavior and Body Mass Index in Toddlers Using Accelerometers California Lutheran University December 10, 2014 Ashley Marten Advisor Dr. Kelly Abstract OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to observe a possible correlation between sedentary activity levels and body mass index (BMI) in toddlers. METHODS: I assessed physical activity (PA) over three to seven days using the ActiGraph GTM1 accelerometer in 80 toddlers (mean age 1.88 years; 58% male; 38% Hispanic; and 43% overweight) defined by weight percentile (âⰠ¥85th percentile for age and gender) from Ventura County, California. RESULTS: There does not appear to be any significant difference in the activity levels of obese versusâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Furthermore, there are no studies relating toddlers and physical activity levels (Goran et al. 1998). An increase in knowledge provides information for preventative strategies. Physical activity is important in chronic disease prevention including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. When children get these diseases, they escalate much quicker than they do in adults (Sothern et al. 1999). Physical activity is very important in determining the adiposity rebound phase of preschool children. Adiposity rebound is the period in which BMI increases after reaching the lowest level during development. This period is a critical period that determines the risk of obesity later in life. Earlier adiposity rebound correlates to higher rates of obesity in adulthood (Rolland et al. 2006). Nutritional intake does not correlate to the time that adiposity rebound occurs, but the amount of sedentary behavior may play a role. There is not enough data to determine what effects the time in which adiposity rebound occurs (Dorosity et al. 2000). The most accurate method for measuring activity levels in children is accelerometry. Accelerometers are also effective in determining activity levels in toddlers (Cauwenberghel et al. 2011). The aim of this study is to use accelerometers to quantify activity levels in a contemporary representative sample of children 12-36 months in age, and

Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness Essay Example For Students
Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness Essay The poem uses nature to symbolize the stages in someones life, Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness creates a very springtime atmosphere yet it also suggests a sense of ripeness. We can see that this stanza is appealing to the sense of sight as it creates a perfect picture of the Maturing Sun.Ã At the beginning of this stanza it creates a picture of beautiful, deserted mountains in the springtime, as all fruit is filled with with ripeness to the core. The poem is used to symbolize the stages in ones life and would suggest that this stage of the poem represents the prime of someones life as they think warm days will never cease. Keats uses a more positive side of nature in the first stanza, the words fruitfulness, ripeness, swell and plump helps to build a calm sunny atmosphere. Keats also uses religious words such as blessed and vines which reminds us of the wine at the last supper.Ã To bend with apples the mossd cottage tree appeals to our sense of touch, it builds a peaceful picture of beauty in our minds. Shortly after the bees think summer will never end, this reflects the transitory nature of life. The next stanza portrays images of comfort and relaxation, especially when the poet describes someone as sitting careless on a granary floor then there is an image of a person sound asleep in the middle of a field. The poet makes it seem like everyone has stopped everything and decided to laze about. The poet has effectively created a dreamlike mood here as he describes the fume of poppies.Ã The whole idea of laziness in the poem relates to the middle aged period in a persons life. It is as if the person doesnt want to get any older and doesnt want winter to take its natural turn. The stanza ends with the image of worker pressing apples, the poet gives us an idea of the calm, gentle mood that he has thou watchest the last oozings.Ã The third and last stanza brings the long awaited and dreaded winter, the stanza begins giving us the idea that the poet is in a calm and collected mood. The poet realizes how spring is usually associated with happy times yet strongly disagrees, he believes that autumn is the bringer of the good times.Ã And touch the stubble-plain with rosy hue this paints a beautiful yet melancholic picture of autumn which is very different from the ripe abundant images of the first two stanzas. This also express the main theme of the poem, that life is a mixture of good and bad times. I have concluded that both poets have gone threw similar stages in there own lives, however I have noticed that Keats accepts changes and tries to move on whereas Wordsworth leaves himself in a worried state and cant quite grasp the fact that life changes as we get older, sometimes for the best and sometimes for the worst.
